Welcome to November!

Hello Everyone!

It's crazy to think that 2 months of school has flown by and December is right around the corner!

St. Jude’s Academy is excited to welcome back to our school the talented artists from ArtReach Mississauga to lead exciting art workshops for our students.  Students will have a chance to join the ArtReach professionals for a two hour workshop at SJA that focuses on engaging and comprehensive visual art activities. ArtReach will be joining SJA on November 30th, December 1st and December 2nd. The cost of the workshop is $15.00.  This cost includes the workshop fee, and all materials.  Forms and fees are due back to the school by November 3rd, 2016.

We will be celebrating Guy Fawkes Day on Friday November 4th. Please see a copy of the poem below, as students are asked to memorize it for Friday.

The Fifth of November

    Remember, remember!
    The fifth of November,
    The Gunpowder treason and plot;
    I know of no reason
    Why the Gunpowder treason
    Should ever be forgot!
    Guy Fawkes and his companions
    Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
    All up alive.
    Threescore barrels, laid below,
    To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
    A stick and a stake
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
    Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

Scientist in the school permission form and money due Friday November 4th!

UOI:  In Light and Sound we saw that sound can be reflected and absorbed. We went outside to play a game, and we also watched a video on Echolocation. Students learned that sound travels, and when we hear our voices when we yell out it is because the sound is bouncing off the objects around us, and travelling back into our ear.

Math: Please start practicing capacity. We used out Math period to prepare for our OWA assessment tomorrow.

Spelling/ Language: Spelling lesson 8 is due Friday.
Today we also practiced for our OWA tomorrow. Students put a report in order and we practiced paraphrasing paragraphs. I have sent home the reports we practiced writing today so students can prepare for the assessment tomorrow. My suggestion is that students find a topic and write a report at home that a parent can read. If the parent understands the report than the report has been done well.

Anne of Green Gables: No Anne of Green Gables today.

French- No spelling test on Friday

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

No homework tonight! Everyone stay safe and make sure you brush your teeth after you eat most of your candy tonight!

We conducted some experiments today in UOI. We learned what pitch is and that sound is created in waves. The students learned that high pitch waves are small and tight, and a higher pitch is created when an object vibrates faster. A lower pitch has waves that are large and spread apart. Lower pitches vibrate much slower. We also watched a video with musical glasses. Take a look!

In the afternoon we had a Halloween Dance! It was a ton of fun! I hope you all had a great night!

TGIF!

Halloween is fast approaching! Students are allowed to dress up in their costumes on Monday!

A big Congratulations to our Learner Profile winner this month!

UOI:  Presentations are officially complete! Fabulous job my friends! One more group has their presentation on Monday.

In Light and Sound students worked on brainstorming safety rules for their hearing and ears. Students are required to create a poster over the weekend. The poster doesn't have to have draw pictures, students are allowed to print pictures and paste them onto their poster.

Did you know that we should only be putting things the size of our elbow inside our ear! Students also received a safety poster assignment which will be due on Monday October 31st, 2016.

Math: Please continue reviewing and working on elapsed time.

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Halloween is fast approaching! Students are allowed to dress up in their costumes on Monday!

UOI:  Presentations will take place on Friday and then we are officially done our first UOI unit!

In Light and Sound we learned about the human ear. We completed a KWL chart to review what we knew about the ear, what we want to learn about the ear and then lastly what we learned after we watched a few videos and read an article about the ear. We also learned how sound travels and the important parts of the ear. Lastly, we labelled the ear on our UOI board. Did you know that we should only be putting things the size of our elbow inside our ear! Students also received a safety poster assignment which will be due on Monday October 31st, 2016.

Here is the video and article we used in class today! Just click the link!

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Tomorrow is picture day! Please come in FULL uniform! :) Don't forget to bring in your picture day forms as well.

UOI:  Presentations will take place on Friday and then we are officially done our first UOI unit!

In Light and Sound we conducted a few more experiments with Mrs. Hocevar's class. We learned that our vocal cords vibrate and the harder or softer they vibrate controls the volume of our voice. We also learned that sound is a type of energy that we hear. Tomorrow we will learn about the human ear and how we can hear with it, and we will brainstorm different ways to protect it.

I have also added some videos of our experiments yesterday on the blog post from yesterday!

Math: We continued with Elapsed time today in class. We completed our textbook work and practiced telling time. We also cleared up a few misconceptions with "Quarter to" , "Quarter past" and "Half Past" the hour. Please see extra practice sheets below if you would like to complete them.
