Good Evening Parents!

UOI: Students filled their map of Canada with the capital cities for the provinces and territories. First we brainstormed the provinces and territories as a review, and then the students filled in all the capital cities. They only missed 3 capital cities out of the 13! Way to go my friends! Tomorrow we will be learning about the major oceans and Great Lakes.

We would also like to  fill our UOI board with post cards from different provinces and territories in Canada. Students are encouraged to ask friends and/or family that live in another province or territory to send them a post card to add to our UOI board. We would love to add some to our board!

Provinces and Territory Quiz on Monday Sept. 26! Please use the websites below to study for the quiz. Students will be required to fill out a map of Canada with the provinces, territories and capital cities. Students will also be required to name the oceans and Great Lakes. We will be learning the rest of these topics this week. I have also sent home a quiz review sheet so the students can start studying at home. Please return the green folders everyday.

Spelling: Students have began Lesson 2 in their spelling books. Spelling test is on Friday and Lesson 2 is also due on Friday.

Math: We worked on estimating differences today. Students have Practice book pages to complete. The word about is very useful in math as it tells us that we need to estimate. One student also gave us a definition for estimation, which is a "good guess". Tomorrow we will be working on comparing and ordering numbers up to 10,000.

Math Quiz on Friday September 23rd! The quiz will be based on Place Value, rounding numbers, estimating sums and differences, mental math. We will complete a review on Thursday. 

Anne of Green Gables: Today we read chapter one of the new adapted version of Anne of Green Gables. I have emailed out a scanner version from Chapters One to Five to all parents. Students must complete the Chapter 1 sheets which are apart of the Novel Study package found in their red folders.

Today we had a presentation for our upcoming Terry Fox Run. The students heard the personal story of cancer survivor and the importance of Terry Fox. Students have received the pledge form on Friday which are due on Sept. 29. St. Jude's fundraising goal is $4000!!

UOI: Students studied the map of Canada further today and filled in the provinces and territories. Students learned the difference between a province and territory, as well as learned when Canada became a country, the very first Prime Minister, and the creation of Nunavut. Ms. Schwarz was only 9 years old when Nunavut was created!! :O

I will be emailing a picture of the cover and further details later this evening just in case you would like to go to the library to find a copy.

UOI/ Language: Today students completed their pre-assessment for the Ontario writing assessment. Students works individually and brainstormed and then wrote a report about how life would be like without electricity.

Once they completed their report they were able to choose a flag from a Canadian province or territory and colour it so we can hang it in our classroom.

Math:  To we practiced rounding numbers in math centres. 

Centre 1: Roll and round. Students rolled three dice, recorded the numbers and then rounded them to the nearest ten and hundreds.

Centre 2: Task cards. Students were able to work as a pair or individually on 4 task cards of their choice. They rounded a 4 digit number, placed a number on a number line, rounded 3 or 4 digit numbers to the nearest hundred, and then solved a word problem.

Centre 3: Individual work. Students worked through the text book answer the questions individually.

Centre 4: Work with the teacher. At centre 4 students worked with me clearing up any misconceptions, discussing how answers were right or wrong and we took up homework. 

Each group was able to rotate around once. It was a successful first try at the math centre Friday!

If you have not ordered the winter uniforms please do so by MONDAY. All grade 4 students are required to have a blazer, tie (Normal and house coloured tie for every Friday) , and a long sleeve dress shirt.

UOI: We tried watching a short clip on Canada today. It was not loading properly so please see the link before so your children can watch it at home. After the malfunction we discussed different symbols that we see in Canada. The students made create predictions and were able to express why they thought these symbols represented Canada.

Language: We have officially began Anne of Green Gables! The students were really captivated by the first chapter and we are so excited to continue reading. If you have a copy of the novel at home please send it to school so your kids can follow along. I have sent home a few comprehension questions to complete for homework, and they are also below for reference.

Chapter 1— Mrs. Rachel Lynde Is Surprised

    1      Who is telling the story?

    2     Briefly describe Matthew's character?

    3      Why is Rachel so interested in Matthew's behaviour?
